Denver\u2019s Renegade Brewing today announced the sale of an undisclosed stake to Silver Fox Partners, a Northeastern family office founded earlier this year by Anne Mulcahy, the former CEO and Chairwoman of the Xerox Corporation.<\/p>\n

Specific financial terms of the deal, which was finalized last Wednesday, were not disclosed.<\/p>\n

Renegade founder Brian O\u2019Connell, who\u00a0launched the brewery in 2011<\/a>\u00a0with funding from about 20 friends and family investors, will continue to serve as CEO. All of the company\u2019s original investors will also retain equity in the brewery, he told Brewbound.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are expecting to see some pretty huge growth, and everyone wants to stay in for the ride,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis transaction solidifies Renegade as an independent craft brewery,\u201d he added. \u201cWe have taken on significant capital and are participating in the market as an independent craft brewer from here on out.\u201d<\/p>\n

The decision to seek outside investment from a family office \u2014 a process that began in April \u2014 stemmed from a desire to \u201cremain competitive\u201d at a time when private equity firms and large breweries have purchased stakes in dozens of craft breweries around the U.S., O\u2019Connell told Brewbound.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor us to stay competitive, we needed a big boost,\u201d he said. \u201cWe started as a small company, and we were constantly feeding money back into the business and bootstrapping.\u201d<\/p>\n

O\u2019Connell said he plans to use the infusion of capital from Silver Fox to \u201cenhance\u201d the company\u2019s current operations, develop a line of barrel-aged offerings and hire new sales, marketing and brewing personnel.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is an opportunity for us to do the things we\u2019ve always wanted to do, but couldn\u2019t,\u201d he said. \u201cIn a bootstrap model, we weren\u2019t able to go out and do all the exploration we wanted. Now we can feed the engine we\u2019ve already created.\u201d<\/p>\n

On its way to brewing about 6,000 barrels of beer, Renegade will grow about 35 percent in 2017, O\u2019Connell said. The company is forecasting about 8,500 barrels of total output in 2018, he added.<\/p>\n

In addition to its original brewery and taproom location, the company operates a 15,000 sq. ft. facility capable of producing 20,000 barrels annually. It currently distributes beer throughout Colorado via Elite Brands, and to Arizona, Kansas, Ohio and Wisconsin.<\/p>\n

Renegade began packaging its beer in cans in 2012, and self-distributed its products until 2014. The company sells upwards of 450 barrels directly to consumers via its taproom, and about 35 percent of its total production is sold on draft, O\u2019Connell said.<\/p>\n

Renegade is at least the ninth Colorado-based craft brewery to be\u00a0involved in a transaction this year<\/a>. Backcountry Brewery, Deep Draft Brewery, De Steeg Brewing, Fort Collins Brewery, Walnut Brewery, Pug Ryan\u2019s Brewery, Elk Mountain Brewing and 1933 Brewing all changed hands in 2017. Fort Collins-based Funkwerks also\u00a0sold a minority stake<\/a>\u00a0to Brooklyn Brewery.<\/p>\n

Those transactions followed much larger deals involving some of Colorado\u2019s most recognizable breweries. In 2015, the owners of four brewing companies \u2014 Breckenridge Brewery (A-B), Odell Brewing (ESOP),\u00a0Left Hand Brewing (ESOP)<\/a>\u00a0and Oskar Blues Brewery (Fireman Capital) \u2014 sold all or parts of their companies.<\/p>\n

\u201cColorado is a great market for craft beer, and it is going to be a place where investors are interested,\u201d O\u2019Connell said. \u201cIf you are making it in Colorado, and growing in a competitive market, you are showing that you are a brand with some legs.\u201d<\/p>\n

This is Silver Fox Partners\u2019 first investment. The Auctus Group acted as the advisor to Renegade.<\/p>\n

Other immediate plans include hiring additional staff to allow for greater interaction with customers and fans in both Colorado and the other 4 states (Arizona, Kansas, Wisconsin, and Ohio) where Renegade is currently available.<\/em><\/p>\n

Presently, Renegade operates a taproom and production facility in the Santa Fe Arts District in\u00a0<\/em>Denver,\u00a0and will brew approximately 6000 bbls in 2017. Renegade has been voted Best New Brewery and Best Taproom\u00a0<\/em>Ambiance,\u00a0and has collected medals at the Great American Beer Festival, Craft Beer Awards, and the LA International Beer Competition. With this new investment, Renegade anticipates significant growth in 2018.<\/em><\/p>\n
