Does Spirituality have a Place in Hypnotherapy Training?<\/strong><\/p>\n

If the fields of traditional psychology, as taught in most universities, there seems to be a lack of emphasis placed upon spiritual or religious themes.  From an academic point of view, religion is often considered to be archaic and unscientific, and spirituality is simply a personal matter for each individual. Religion and Spirituality<\/strong><\/p>\n

It is not easy to define religion, yet generally we can call most religious practices \u201cexoteric,\u201d in that they focus on external rituals, rules and social conventions.  Spirituality however, might be better defined as being \u201cesoteric,\u201d which refers to an inner experience that is unique to the individual, and that somehow brings more meaning to life through direct personal experience.  Exoteric religion tends to be based upon the rules of a church or temple, whereas esoteric spirituality is based upon one\u2019s own inner guidance, spiritual practices that lead the attention inwards, and a way of thinking that honors the individual\u2019s direct connection to Source.<\/p>\n

And what role does this play in hypnosis?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Technically speaking, spirituality does not play a direct role in hypnosis at all.  Altering someone\u2019s state of consciousness in traditional forms of hypnosis, for whatever benefit, is not necessarily a spiritual practice or a spiritual state at all.  However, in Transpersonal Hypnotherapy, spirituality becomes an essential part of our practice and helps our clients to find more purpose, meaning and direction in life.  It opens us to realms of being beyond the five senses, and lets us explore realities that might otherwise be denied in mainstream universities or in traditional religions.  Such topics may include:<\/p>\n
